I have 34 years of teaching experience, but this is my first year teaching calculus. I bought this book hoping for something more readable for my students. I found what I wanted and then some. After comparing several sections, I now have this book on the desk next to the one I was given to teach from.

My current text gives one paragraph to rectilinear motion and left the students confused. Anton has three sections that spiral with the material under consideration and does an excellent job. He also includes clear examples and graphs for each section along with a review of the previous related material. A PhD in mathematics might find this tedious, but it's just what my students need.

Another example is asymptotes other than horizontal or vertical. Both texts give the standard presentation on functions with two horizontal asymptotes. My current text then gives one example with minimal explanation of how to do a slant asymptote. Anton gives a very clear explanation and follows that by showing an example of a parabolic asymptote. I could see the lights go on as the students suddenly realized there are many types of asymptotes and the concept was much clearer to them afterwards.

Several times a student has asked a "what if" question I had not thought of in my preparation. The majority of times my text is silent. Anton has almost already addressed the issue. I am much better prepared after reading Anton first.

Anton also pushes the student to "think in pictures". For example, graph the function and first and second derivatives side by side to compare and contrast. In my text a few problems address this issue, in Anton it is a theme that permeates the course.

If there is a fault, I would say this text is short on simple skill practice problems. My students' algebra skills are on the low side for calculus students and need more than the expected amount of practice with basic manipulations.

why an 8th edition? - W Boudville - Terra, Sol 3
I'm a little befuddled why Anton sees the need for an 8th edition of this long-running book. Apart from possibly ginning up sales of this, instead of the 7th edition.

The material is well presented. Make no mistake about this. The prose is polished, and the arguments put in front of the student are logical and should be easy to follow if she pays attention. To further grab this attention, there is the usual colourful graphics and photos.

The underlying material hasn't changed in 200 years. If you have an earlier edition of this book, and your class does not mandate the 8th edition, then you should do just as well by using the earlier book.
